“Into the Woods” is an extremely successful musical by Stephen Sondheim. I have seen the production twice (once a university performance, the other as part of Shakespeare in the Park by the Public Theatre) and each time, I am blown away but always have a bit of a problem with the ending.
If you don’t know, this is about certain fairy-tale characters who have desires and what happens when they get what they want. For instance, there is a baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) who cannot have a child until they give four items to a witch (Meryl Streep). Cinderella (Anna Kendrick) wants to go to the ball. And there’s Jack (Daniel Huttlestone) from “Jack and the Beanstalk” and Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford) as well.
I’ve been pretty excited for this film adaptation. I love every member of the cast and knew that there would be changes. Two of my favorite numbers are “Hello, Little Girl” by the Wolf (Johnny Depp) and “Agony” by the two princes (Chris Pine and Billy Magnussen) and I wasn’t disappointed. Depp’s makeup was a little silly but I still the Wolf. “Agony” was staged so perfectly, I never will forget that in my life. Also, I can’t believe Pine sings so well! The ladies were all fantastic, I was especially impressed by Blunt. I normally hate Little Red Riding Hood but Crawford made her somewhat likable. The sets were great and I really loved all of Colleen Atwood’s costumes.
A great adaptation of a beloved work.
