Yeah, I missed this the first time around. My own fault, really. I thought it looked cute but was wary when it first premiered. However, with all the hype lately, especially due to Gina Rodriguez’s Golden Globe win, I decided now was a good time to try.
Jane Villanueva (Rodriguez) has vowed to keep her virginity until she is married due to the fact that her mother, Xiomara (Andrea Navedo) was only sixteen when she had her. She has plans to become a teacher and is in a relationship with a young detective, Michael Cordero, Jr. (Brett Dier). Unfortunately, a mistake at the doctor’s office leaves her pregnant with another man’s, Rafael Solano (Justin Baldoni), baby.
The overall premise is my worst nightmare. And the show is absolutely ridiculous because it’s set up somewhat like a telenovela. I can deal with telenovela-type shows because I watched Ugly Betty its entire run. Rodriguez is absolutely charming, the show wouldn’t work without her as the lead. I’m liking the triangle set-up and unfortunately, I hate Rafael’s wife, Petra (Yael Grobglas). I’m hoping she becomes a little more dimensional. I am officially hooked on this show and need to catch up.
