the sparrow by mary doria russell

First Sword & Laser book of the year.

In 2019, a transmission of music from space is heard on Earth. The Jesuits organize a group of scientists and a priest, Emilio Sandoz, to travel to the planet and find out more about life there.

What I found interesting was the mix of science and religion. Growing up going to Catholic school, I’ve learned all about the Jesuits and how into knowledge they are. The beginning of the book kind of reminded me of Interstellar, but this one had aliens. I liked the characters, especially Anne and George, but really it kind of fell apart at the end. It was a little confusing because they jumped around timelines and such but the end was just too bizarre for me.
