Come on. Like I wasn’t seeing this movie as soon as I could. Potential spoilers, tread lightly.
The Avengers’ latest mission involves finding the sceptre that Loki used in the first movie. While investigating its power, Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) discover artificial intelligence and use this to create Ultron (James Spader). Stark thinks that Ultron will protect the Earth from any invader, but Ultron believes he needs to save the Earth by destroying mankind, especially the Avengers.
Obviously, there’s a bit more but that’s a nicely condensed summary. My initial thoughts were that it was a good movie, but I liked the first one more. I left the theatre from the first one in such a high and this one was a bit more of a downer.
Because of the new character, Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), who has the ability to mess with minds, there was a lot of self-doubt in characters who are usually so sure of themselves. Yes, it helped with character development but it didn’t sit well with me.
So let’s get into characters! Downey is still great as Tony even though his morals were a bit on the wrong side. I blame the fact that there was no Pepper. (I missed her greatly!) And I enjoy his continuing friendship with Bruce. He and Ruffalo are great together. Can we just have Science Bros: The Movie next? Still think Chris Evans is doing a great job as Steve Rogers/Captain America and love that he seemed way more in charge this time around. Felt like Chris Hemsworth was a bit lost as Thor. Maybe he needs Loki to balance him? Loved learning more about Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), really grounded him and it helped the movie a bit.
And now, we get to the troublesome part: Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson). I kind of hated that her storyline revolved around a romance with Bruce. I appreciate them going there because it is an interesting pairing and helped show a different side to her but again, that was pretty much her ENTIRE storyline. Yeah, she was still badass and such, but come on. She deserved better.
The newbies were great. Especially Olsen as Wanda. And I loved Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Pietro/Quicksilver. Ultron was Spader being Spader. Super creepy yet I think one of the better villains in the MCU. Oh, and can’t forget The Vision (Paul Bettany). Always approve of Bettany and I enjoy that he appears naked in like all of his movies. I’m really looking forward to seeing more of him.
The action was a little overblown for me. Nothing stands out in amazing fight scenes or anything. Same with the CGI. Yeah, Hulkbuster was cool but that scene needed some editing. Again, there was nothing really wrong with this movie but the first one is so incredible, I knew this one wouldn’t really live up to it. Basically, I’m ready for Phase Three. Bring it.
